Disney100: the exhibition- Excel London

I highly recommend fitting the IFS cable car ride before or after the exhibition to travel from/to the 02 from/to Excel London, maybe to have some food or visit the 02 outlet, (or simply to experience the 10 mins cable ride) for an amazing view of the Thames, Canary Wharf and more.

If you are a Legoland obsessed and can’t wait for the warmer season to come around quick enough for Legoland to reopen, make sure to take your family on a delightful adventure to Legoland Windsor’s indoor Mini Golf during February half term. Tip: it can be quite difficult to get hold of tickets, best is to try getting tickets on Monday mornings when free tickets are released three weeks in advance for that week only. Check on March 11th or March 18th to hopefully secure some tickets for the Easter holidays.

Unleash your child’s creativity with a range of arts immersive experiences offered at various venues across London. There are so many to choose from. Here are a few:

The Power Up is a gaming experience, featuring the very best video games and consoles from the past 50 years to play against friends in multiplayer showdowns. • The Museum of London is currently closed to move location and will reopen in 2026.
• The British Museum, with its two million years of human history, art and culture. Travel through the different galleries and learn about the Roman Empire, have a glimpse of the famous Rosetta Stone or the statue of Ramessess II and more. • The London Transport Museum, with its 200 years of London and its transport history, and the stories of the people who have travelled and worked in the city. Give it a visit this half term for some family fun for the special event “Women at work” celebrating 50 years of London Transport first recruiting women as bus drivers in 1974. OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

Light festival at Battersea Power Station – free activity

Explore seven light art installations from 25th January to 25th February 2024 from British and international artists, a number of which are making their UK or London debut. From a giant diamond and illuminated butterflies, to a playable light piano and cycling light battle, there is lots to explore! The installations will be lit daily from 8am – 11pm. There is also a whole host of family-friendly workshops, free face painting and live entertainment and music throughout the festival. Worshops can be booked through the Battersea website.

Kew Gardens Orchid Festival – Richmond

Visiting Kew Gardens promises a delightful blend of nature, exploration, and discovery;  a literal breath of fresh air. From the iconic Palm House to the grand treetop walkway, Kew Gardens offers a captivating array of attractions to explore, each offering opportunities for hands-on learning and adventure. Youngsters can embark on nature trails, enjoy the children’s garden, marvel at exotic plant species, and have a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

This half term, families visiting Kew Gardens can also immerse themselves in the vibrant beauty of the annual Orchid Festival, this year, inspired by the beauty of Madagascar.

The Orchid Festival showcases an array of stunning orchid displays, exotic varieties of orchids from around the world, each more breathtaking than the last. Whether it’s discovering the secrets of the rainforest or spotting wildlife in the vast landscapes, Kew has something to offer to the whole family. Get your tickets here.

What is Chandeleur

In the heart of winter, just when the frost begins to thaw and whispers of spring linger in the air, French people embrace the long lasting tradition known as Chandeleur. Observed on February 2nd, Chandeleur, also called Candlemas in many parts of the world, marks the midpoint between winter solstice and the spring equinox. That time of year when the days are getting longer! It’s a delightful occasion celebrated with delicious crêpes and candlelight.

ITS History

Chandeleur has roots that intertwine religious significance with ancient pagan traditions. Originally a Christian feast commemorating the presentation of Jesus at the temple and the purification of the Virgin Mary, it later absorbed elements of pagan rituals celebrating the return of light and the promise of spring. The word “Chandeleur” itself is derived from the Latin term “festum candelarum,” meaning “feast of candles.”

NOWADAYS FRENCH Customs and Traditions

At the heart of Chandeleur celebrations are the age-old customs that continue to enchant families across France. One enduring tradition involves the lighting of candles, symbolizing the returning light and warmth of the sun as winter wanes and spring draws nearer. In some regions, people bless candles in churches and carry them in processions through the streets, infusing the night with a soft, flickering glow.

However, the culinary highlight of Chandeleur undoubtedly lies in the art of making and enjoying crêpes; sweet and/or savoury.

Not to be confused with pancakes which are veryy different! Crêpes are larger, thin and not fluffy.

They hold a special place in French culture, and Chandeleur offers the perfect excuse to indulge in their delectable goodness. Legend has it that spinning a crêpe in one hand while holding a gold coin in the other ensures prosperity and good fortune for the coming year.

My GO-TO Vegan Crêpes Recipe

Ingredients

This recipe will make about 15/20 crepes. I personally double those quantities for my family of four. If you are like me and enjoy savoury and sweet crepes made from the small batter, use no sugar/no or less vanilla in the following recipe.

• 2 cups all-purpose flour
• 2 1/2 cups plant-based milk (such as almond, soy, or oat milk) mixed with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar (act as an egg alternative)
• 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
• 2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions

1. In a large mixing bowl or electric mixer (I use the kitchenaid mixer), whisk together the flour and sugar (if using). I sieve the flour in my video to avoid lumps in the batter.
2. Pour the vegetable oil and vanilla extract (if using). Gradually pour in the plant-based milk. Whisk until smooth and well combined. The batter should be thin, similar to the consistency of heavy cream. If it’s too thick, add a little more vegan milk.
3. Heat a non-stick crêpe pan over medium heat. Lightly grease the pan with oil (spray) or vegan butter.
4. Once the pan is hot, pour a small ladleful of batter into the centre of the pan. Quickly tilt and swirl the pan to spread the batter evenly in a thin layer.
5. Cook the crêpe for 1-2 minutes, or until the edges start to lift and the bottom is lightly golden brown.
6. Carefully flip the crêpe using a spatula, and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes on the other side, until lightly golden.
7. Transfer the cooked crêpe to a plate and cover with a clean kitchen towel to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining batter, greasing the pan as needed.
8. Serve the crêpes warm with your favourite vegan fillings and toppings, such as fresh fruit, dairy-free chocolate spread, vegan ice cream or vegan whipped cream. Or be creative and add savoury fillings, such as hummus, spinach and vegan cheese; those fillings for a savoury crêpe would need to be added whilst one side of the crêpe has been cooked and the other side is still cooking on the pan.

What is it? And why?

Galette des Rois, which means the “King’s Cake”, is a traditional French delight, a delicious almond-filled pastry encased in layers of puff pastry, enjoyed during Epiphany which marks the end of the holiday season – a sweet farewell to the festive chaos.

This delicious treat is not only a celebration of the three wise men but also a culinary masterpiece that brings friends and family together, often an occasion for families and friends to come together for a festive meal or tea time; an occasion to give our best wishes for the new year. It’s a common tradition in workplaces and social groups as well.

This delectable treat is typically enjoyed in France and other French-speaking regions on January 6th, known as Epiphany or Twelfth Night, known as La Fête des Rois; the Feast of the Kings, but the entire month of January is often dedicated to enjoying this sweet tradition. In France, bakeries and patisseries start selling Galette des Rois (sold with a paper crown! learn more below ) well before the day itself, allowing people to enjoy the delicious treat for an extended period.

It can usually be found in French bakeries in London, especially in Kensington or even at Paul bakeries. I haven’t found a vegan Galette des Rois in London yet…let me know if you do! In the meantime, I have been making my own (and also my own crown…this year my youngest son made one at school for the King’s coronation…that saved me a task!)

What are its particularities?

Puff Pastry

The galette is typically made with layers of buttery puff pastry. This pastry is known for its flaky and light texture, creating a delightful base for the sweet filling.

Almond Filling

The heart of the Galette des Rois is its almond filling. This filling, known as frangipane, is made from almond flour, sugar and butter. It has a rich and nutty flavor that complements the buttery layers of the puff pastry.

Fève

A unique feature of the Galette des Rois is the hidden trinket or charm called the “fève” (bean), traditionally a small porcelain or plastic figurine, or even a raw dry bean. The fève is hidden within the almond filling before the galette is assembled. The person who discovers the fève in their slice is crowned the king or queen for the day and may wear a paper crown that often accompanies the galette.

Crown Tradition

In addition to the fève, it’s customary to crown the person who finds it. Many Galette des Rois are sold with a paper crown, making the moment of discovery both delicious and regal.

Variations

While the classic Galette des Rois features almond frangipane, variations exist. Some galettes may incorporate other fillings such as chocolate, fruit, or cream, offering a creative twist on this traditional pastry.

RECIPE

It can also be made just as delicious without the use of animal products. This plant-based adaptation allows you to savour the sweet flavours of almond and puff pastry while embracing a compassionate approach to dessert-making. Here are the ingredients you will need to make it.

Ingredients:

For the Vegan Puff Pastry:

• 2 sheets of vegan puff pastry (store-bought or homemade)

For the Almond Filling:

• 1 and 3/4 cups of almond flour
• 2/3 cup of powdered sugar (I use coconut sugar in my video, this works as well)
• 6 tbsp of vegan butter, softened
• 2 tablespoons of applesauce (as an egg substitute, or 1 tbsp of ground flax seeds mixed with 2 tbsp of vegan milk, ideally almond milk)
• 1 tsp of almond extract (add 1 extra tsp for added flavour)
• 1 tsp of vanilla extract

For the Assembly:

• 1 fève (small figurine or bean)
• 1 tablespoon plant-based milk (for brushing)

Appliances I use:

• Kitchenaid (this saves me so much time and effort)
• Measuring cups

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Vegan Almond Filling.

In a mixing bowl, combine powdered sugar and softened vegan butter. Mix until you achieve a smooth and homogenous paste. In a small bowl, whisk together the ground flax seeds with the almond milk. Let it sit 5 minutes until thickened. OR add applesauce to the sugar/butter paste. Add the almond flour, the almond extract and the vanilla extract. Mix until you achieve a smooth and homogenous almond cream, called frangipane.

Step 2: Prepare two discs of vegan puff pastry.

Roll out the Vegan Puff Pastry sheets. Cut two discs slightly larger than your round dish. Arrange one disc on a baking sheet at the bottom of your round dish.

Step 3: Create the Vegan Galette Base.

Spoon the almond filling onto the center, leaving about an inch border around the edges. Insert the fève somewhere in the almond filling. Avoid the middle of the base or it would be discovered when cutting the galette into slices.

Step 4: Seal the Vegan Galette.

Moisten the border of the pastry with water using a pastry brush. Carefully place the second sheet of vegan puff pastry over the almond filling, pressing down the edges to seal the galette. Trim any excess pastry if needed, and use a fork to crimp the edges for a decorative finish.

Step 5: Brush with Plant-Based Milk.

Brush the top of the galette with plant-based milk to give it a beautiful golden shine when baked.

Step 6: Give a beautiful pattern to your galette.

Be creative. Use a knife or a fork and give your galette a beautiful pattern. Make sure you also pierce a few small holes on the surface of the puff pastry so it does not trap air when baking.

Step 7: Bake to Vegan Perfection.

Preheat your oven to 175°C (375°F). Bake the vegan galette for 35-40 minutes or until it turns golden brown and puffs up beautifully. Wait 30 minutes before serving, so the almond filling does not crumble when you cut your galette and let me know what you think of this French traditional cake!

But really, the Galette des Rois is more than just a delicious pastry; it’s a symbol of togetherness, celebration, and the joy of sharing good moments with loved ones for the end of the festive season (which lasts for most of January, no blue Monday in France??).

Ingredients

For the Vegan Pancakes (the measurement below will make about 12 pancakes)

• 3 cups all-purpose flour
• 4 tablespoons granulated sugar (I use coconut sugar in my video)
• 2 tablespoon baking powder
• 2 cups plant-based milk (I use oat milk in my video)
• 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
• 4 tablespoons vegetable oil (I use olive oil)
• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Decorating:

• Vegan whipped cream
• Bananas
• Fresh strawberries
• Fresh blueberries
• Maple syrup (optional)

Instructions

• Mix together the flour, baking powder and granulated sugar in a large bowl or electric mixer (I have the Kitchenaid mixer).
• On the side, add the apple cider vinegar to the plant-based milk and leave it to rest for a few minutes for it to curdle. This will act as egg substitute so the batter doesn’t break when cooking.
• In the meantime, add the oil and vanilla extract to the bowl or mixer and start stirring. Add the the plant-based milk / apple cider vinegar mix when ready to the bowl or mixer and stir until fully combined. Do not over mix or the pancakes may not be as fluffy.

• Heat up a non stick pancake pan over medium-high heat with a tiny amount of vegan butter or oil. I use the olive oil spray, I find it to be the best to cook pancakes or crepes.
• Pour about 1/3 cup of the batter onto the pan. Cook until bubbles form on the surface, then flip with a spatula and cook until the other side is golden brown. Repeat until you have a stack of delicious pancakes.
• Take one pancake and place it in the middle of a large plate. Cut up a banana in slices, wash your strawberries and cut length them in half.

• Make Santa’s beard: Add maple syrup on the bottom half of the pancake (that’s optional) and place the banana slices over it. It should cover about the bottom half of the pancake, add more banana slices at the bottom for a long beard effect.
• Add Santa’s hat: Add the strawberry halves at the top edge of the pancake in a hat shape. Add a dash of whipped cream along the strawberries/pancake edge and at the end of the ‘hat’.
• Form Santa’s eyes and mouth: Simply place two blueberries as Santa’s eyes. You may add some blueberries over the bananas as Santa’s mouth.
• Add Santa’s nose: Cut the bottom of a strawberry, turn it around and voilà – place it between the blueberries and the banana slices.
• Complete the Look: You may add some whipped cream at the top edge of the banana slices as Santa’s moustache (or for the whipped cream lovers)
• Serve and Enjoy: Serve the Santa Pancakes and watch as the little ones light up with excitement at the sight of these festive treats.

• On the side, add the apple cider vinegar to the plant-based milk and leave it to rest for a few minutes for it to curdle. This will act as egg substitute so the batter doesn’t break when cooking.
• In the meantime, add the oil and vanilla extract to the bowl or mixer and start stirring. Add the the plant-based milk / apple cider vinegar mix when ready to the bowl or mixer and stir until fully combined. Do not over mix or the pancakes may not be as fluffy.
• Heat up a non stick pancake pan over medium-high heat with a tiny amount of vegan butter or oil. I use the olive oil spray, I find it to be the best to cook pancakes or crepes.
• Pour about 1/3 cup of the batter onto the pan. Cook until bubbles form on the surface, then flip with a spatula and cook until the other side is golden brown. Repeat until you have a stack of delicious pancakes.
• Take one pancake and place it in the middle of a large plate. Cut up a banana in slices, wash your strawberries and cut length them in half.
• Make Santa’s beard: Add maple syrup on the bottom half of the pancake (that’s optional) and place the banana slices over it. It should cover about the bottom half of the pancake, add more banana slices at the bottom for a long beard effect.
• Add Santa’s hat: Add the strawberry halves at the top edge of the pancake in a hat shape. Add a dash of whipped cream along the strawberries/pancake edge and at the end of the ‘hat’.
• Form Santa’s eyes and mouth: Simply place two blueberries as Santa’s eyes. You may add some blueberries over the bananas as Santa’s mouth.
• Add Santa’s nose: Cut the bottom of a strawberry, turn it around and voilà – place it between the blueberries and the banana slices.
• Complete the Look: You may add some whipped cream at the top edge of the banana slices as Santa’s moustache (or for the whipped cream lovers)
• Serve and Enjoy: Serve the Santa Pancakes and watch as the little ones light up with excitement at the sight of these festive treats.

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and what better way to amp up the holiday cheer than by decking the halls with not one but two Christmas trees? About five years ago, I decided to dive into the realm of whimsy and nature-inspired magic with my very first Balsam Hill tree, and let me tell you, I love having my classic timeless nature inspired 7’ tall Christmas tree every year without fault! I keep adding those themed ornaments on a yearly basis if I can. And nestled in my cozy library room, featuring wooden shelves and a crackling fireplace, this tree turned my bookish haven into one of those Christmas Harry Potter movie scenes!

Choosing the Tree

Balsam Hill has been my go-to for my latest artificial Christmas trees that look so real, even Santa himself might do a double-take. Five years ago, I picked the classic pre-lit Fir tree – lifelike needles, full branches, and the promise of a holiday canvas just waiting for my timeless creative touch. It was expensive, even though it was on sale but I can see it last forever. In my Christmassy opinion, so worth it.

THE magical and classical addition of A TRAIN SET

Adding a festive train set made all the difference, it is so traditional and a must for a classic look. It adds an extra layer of enchantment to the room, creating a holiday soundtrack that brings the entire scene to life. With a lego train set that I bought a few years ago around the Christmas tree (that was the first Lego I purchased for our Christmas display). It is now discontinued on the lego website but still available on Amazon at a significantly higher price tag. The train motor would need to be purchased separately here.

I have since added to our Lego Festive collection which we display in our library room every Christmas. I have been purchasing one festive set from the Lego website for our Christmas Eve box every year since (stay tuned for my post coming up on my Christmas Eve box tradition).

And that is our Christmas Eve sorted – building a lego; this has now become our family tradition. You can see a glimpse of our lego Gingerbread house in my YouTube video above.

We also have the lego Santa’s visit house and my absolute favourite the lego Elf house. The lego Christmas sets get discontinued quite quickly so my advise would be to purchase them on the lego website when they get released which is usually around the end of September/early October. They usually remain available from Amazon but sometimes cost up to twice, even three times the original price.

Pastels, PINE CONES and Woodland Shenanigans!

Forget the traditional reds and greens; this year, more than ever, my tree is singing a pastel symphony! Picture this: the glow of a crackling fireplace, serving as the perfect backdrop for a holiday explosion of pastel perfection; a riot of soft pinks, minty greens, and dreamy pine cone colours in perfect holiday harmony.

Because who says Christmas can’t have a little softness and sass? I am all for sustainability and eco-friendly ornaments; how cool to go to my local woods, pick up some pine cones and feel up those spaces in my Christmas tree – love it

And of course, the forest critters! Deer, owls, squirrels – they all joined the library party, transforming my bookish sanctuary into a woodland carnival. It’s like the characters from my favorite tales decided to celebrate Christmas right alongside me.

It may be also worth checking out your local Christmas shops for some great finds – that’s what I did For great deals, make sure you visit them from 23rd December. They usually have amazing bargains from that date

UNTIL NEXT YEAR

As I sink into the coziness of my library, surrounded by the crackle of the fireplace, I can’t help but think this tree, standing tall and proud in my classic haven, has turned my reading retreat into a festive escape.

Now, I’ve got the perfect canvas to unleash my ornament obsession. It’s like the North Pole collided with a Christmas superstore in my house, and I am here for the holiday extravaganza! Let’s deck the halls and why not add a mischievous twist this year and turn it into a Grinch tree that’ll steal the show (and maybe a few hearts)?

Here is my Grinch Tree (the real kicker) so far (with hopefully more ornaments to come – stay tuned). The tree featuring below is the 7′ Silverado Slim tree with the clear LED Fairy lights.

Have a glimpse

FIRST STEP: ADD all the red and white ornaments

First things first, dig out all those ornaments that I have collected for years and leave out all those ornaments which are neither only white, only red nor red and white. Those will give that touch of Grinch’s signature red and white stripes to your tree. They filled up the tree nicely. And for the first time, I decided to make a bouquet topper instead of having a star. I am pleased!

And you know the drill right? Yes, you can have your child helping here but make sure those ornaments are evenly spread on your tree (eventually).

From my earlier selection of ornaments, I also picked those old white/red ornaments that wasn’t making it to the tree anymore, you know the ones which just stay at the bottom of the storage boxes. Let’s see what we can do with those later.

And if you are not like me and are looking to start your red/white ornament collection, Primark (see right picture) has a great range this year.

And so does B&M .

SECOND STEP: ADD those lime green ornaments

Go back to those storage boxes, can you find any lime green ornaments? If not, go directly to step three. If yes, great! you have a better collection than me! Add them to your tree, evenly spread of course.

THIRD STEP: Add a Green Grinchy Touch

Let’s have winter wonderland properly collide with Whoville. Let’s turn those old red/white ornaments grinchy! Love repurposing, we can finally make something out of those old ornaments we have been hanging onto.

Grab some acrylic green and yellow paint. Mix about 60% yellow with 40% green and that should give that famous Grinch hue colour. You could also mix yellow and blue, that should give you the same result. And get painting. Adding a few dots or lines of lime green paint would revive your ornaments and will be a perfect addition to your Grinch tree.

Something else I did was actually pick some of my relatively new ornaments and only added some grinchy paint on one side of the ornaments – future-proofing! You could get rid of the Grinch features in the future by only displaying the side which isn’t painted.

Fourth step: Shop for Grinch ornaments

If like me, you find your tree is not grinchy enough, I am afraid it’s time for shopping around and I did that for you (for those based in the UK).

I’ll be honest, the choices are soo limited. I didn’t think it would be difficult to find Grinch decorations but it really has been. Hopefully more will be released next year.

I found those official Grinch baubles at Typo. They were 3 for £10.

I found this little guy at Costco for £54.99. It’s hand-painted and hand-crafted. So worth it in my opinion, it’s just under 51 cm tall and add the perfect touch.

Primark didn’t release any Grinch tree decorations this year. But I understand the ones from last year can be found on Amazon; at a price tag it seems.

Nothing with good reviews otherwise on Amazon.

Fifth step: Shop for lime green decorations

Add different size of lime green baubles and/or picks (I am still shopping for some of those – or I might wait for the Boxing Day sale). Again I haven’t found any yet in the shops. Amazon have some small ones here and larger ones here, even some heart-shaped ones here.

If you have small ones, I found tidying them up first together (simply thread with thin wire) as a set of three works better and then tie at the tip of a branch.

I also found some large green lollipops on Amazon which I haven’t bought (yet) – I am not sure if that would fit the tree. Let me know what you think in the comment section below.

I am still looking for lime green picks, the ones which look like twigs. Let me know in the comments if you have come across some .

LAST Step: ADD RIBBONS and the famous plates

Now, add ribbons to your Grinch tree. Choose colours that complement the Grinch’s green and red theme. This ribbon on Amazon would add a lovely extra festive touch.

Very last step for now, add the famous ‘Whoville’, ‘Grinch’s lair’ plates. I simply order those cardboard ones from Etsy.

So there you have it ! The Grinch would be proud – and maybe a bit jealous. It’s the perfect combo of sweet and mischievous. And there is still plenty of space on the tree to add more ornaments in the years to come (once I find more deals ).

Why Milan? and when?

As the summer sun began to bid its farewell and with one of my friends about to turn 40, what better way to bid adieu to the warmer months with one last adventure before the brisk autumn winds swept in ? The destination of choice: Milan, the fashion capital of the world. The weekend of choice: the last weekend of September; we were not disappointed by the weather . And this time, no kids – only girlfriends!

Nestled in the heart of Northern Italy, Milan beckons with its captivating blend of fashion, culture and history. Milan is only an hour train journey away from the famous lake Como … more on that in a future post!

From world-class shopping on Via Montenapoleone to exploring iconic landmarks like the Duomo di Milano, my 48 hour Milan adventure was bound to be a memorable one.

WHERE I STAYed

Having only a couple of days in Milan, we took the decision to stay in a central location (zone 1) and that proved to be invaluable. That meant we didn’t waste time travelling to the main sites or money using taxis or the metro. The weather was so gorgeous (27 degrees the whole weekend) that we enjoyed walking out of the door and walking pretty much everywhere; the best way to explore in my opinion.

Choosing accommodation in Milan can be a fashion show in itself and it has some of the best hotels, all the big names are there; Four Seasons, Park Hyatt, Bulgari, Mandarin Oriental and more but, not for us (we wish!), we stayed for 2 nights in a boutique apart hotel named Numa Camperio 10 minutes walk from the main piazza and this was perfect for us. We found the best deal through Expedia Hotel + flight package which included our Easyjet flight.

DAY 1: evening FLIGHT

My weekend getaway began at London’s Luton Airport, where we boarded a late afternoon – direct Easyjet flight to Milan Malpensa Airport (for £80 return per person!). And just two hours later, we landed in the fashion capital of the world! It was late and decided to take a taxi from the airport to our hotel in central Milan, (taxis are expensive in Italy!) the ride cost about 110€ and took 50 mins. There is also the option to take the train from the airport to Milan Centrale train station, this costs €13 per adult and €6.50 per child aged 4 to 13, free for under 4.

Upon arrival, the city’s energy immediately embraced us, despite being 11.30pm by then.

I knew this weekend held promises of adventure, celebration and hopefully a culinary exploration of vegan delights for me.

After dropping our suitcases, we were not ready to end the day. There were loads of bars still open and that was enough for us to have a drink and a few bites!

Day 2: A Day of Cultural Glam

Morning

We started the day with a visit to Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece, “The Last Supper,” located in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie (25 mins walk from the Duomo). Be sure to book your tickets well in advance. It opens at 9am every day apart from Sundays, it opens at 3pm.

We carried on walking towards the iconic Duomo di Milano. Gothic grandeur and Instagram-worthy moments set the stage for a fabulous afternoon. Wow what a monument.

Before exploring further, we sat down for lunch at one of the many restaurants surrounding the piazza del Duomo. I’ll be honest, there were not many vegan options here and found it disappointing for such a touristy square. We did find a vegan burger, it wasn’t great and it was pricey but hey we had a great view of the Duomo whilst eating and enjoying the sun.

Afternoon – no time for siesta

Visiting the Duomo and its terraces is a must. We saved this for the golden hour which was around 5.30pm at that time of year. The architecture, the view and colours didn’t disappoint – note that if you buy a combined ticket which includes terraces and visit of the Cathedral for a visit towards the end of the day (to enjoy the sunset from the rooftop), you may not be able to visit the Cathedral as the last entry is at 6.10pm. The entrance of the Cathedral is on the way down from the terraces. We didn’t know and were not told to make sure to head down to enter the Cathedral before 6.10pm but luckily tickets are valid for 3 days from the day and time you booked your ticket for so we were able to quickly sneak in the following day.

In between lunch and the visit of the Duomo, we strutted through Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a beautiful shopping arcade known for its mosaic floors and glass-domed ceiling – high-end boutiques and charming cafes. It is a must see whether it is to window shop there (like me!) or buy from designer shops. Milan is a great place to shop for UK residents! The prices for certain brands are the same whether it’s in euros or pounds and if you spend over 100€ you are usually able to claim the VAT back. Win-win! The saving may pay for most of that weekend away.

EVENING DRINKS

No bash is complete without drinks, right? And by the time we had finished visiting the Duomo terraces, it was apéro time.

We couldn’t resist the beautifully-lit Duomo as backdrop for that. Had a penne arrabiata on the spot and we headed to Navigli, one of the city’s trendy neighbourhoods showcasing beautiful canals for a taste of the local nightlife (tip: the drinks are almost half the price there )

Day 3: Fashion, BRUNCH AND FLYING HOME OR..

Our Sunday morning started with a cheeky oat milk cappuccino and some peanut butter /homemade raspberry jam toast at a local vegan-friendly café. Fully caffeinated, we began the day by exploring the trendy Brera district, known for its artsy vibe and quaint streets. You can shop for unique souvenirs or visit more art galleries. The renowned Pinacoteca di Brera Gallery is a must-visit for any art enthusiast. Housing an impressive collection of Italian Renaissance art, the gallery provided a serene escape into the world of masterpieces by artists such as Raphael and Caravaggio.

We carried on towards the Milan’s fashion district, Quadrilatero della Moda. Luxury boutiques, designer stores, and street style that could rival the runway. Even if shopping wasn’t on the agenda, the allure of the fashion houses and stylish locals provided an unforgettable experience.

We enjoyed a leisurely brunch at a charming café, savouring Italian pastries (I did find one to be vegan) and coffee back by the Duomo so we could visit the Cathedral this time and collect our bags from the hotel, which was minutes away.

Before heading to Milan Malpensa Airport, make a quick stop at a gelateria to indulge in some gelato aka sorbet to savour your last moments in Milan OR and that’s a big OR do like us and catch a 1hr train to Varenna for a couple of days in dreamy lake Como. That place deserves a post of its own, stay tuned

I would go back!

Whether you’re a fashion enthusiast, an art lover or simply seeking a taste of Italian dolce vita, Milan has something to offer every traveler. Milan is your runway to fabulousness. It is a great European city for us Brits /UK residents to do shopping and save VAT.

Milan’s charm, mixed with its rich history and vibrant atmosphere, left me with a treasure trove of fashion-forward memories. As I sashayed onto my return flight to London, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the spontaneity that led us to this Italian gem and the perfect way it set the stage for a milestone celebration. I hadn’t been to Italy in such a long time and this short trip made me fall in love with Italy again. How could I not with that stunning sunset over the Dolomites..

And I also couldn’t help feeling Milan didn’t do me justice with the vegan food it had to offer, it was one of those weekend getaways which we purposely didn’t fully plan – let’s see what we come across kind of weekend. I missed some opportunities to try tasty vegan food there – a reason to go back and explore the city in a different way.

I never thought I would ever be able to have my own website but here I am ! After procrastinating for so long I finally took the plunge.. and making a website definitely sounds harder than it actually is. I am a complete IT novice by the way and I am so glad I gave it a go!

Sometimes you just got to start..and ignore the thoughts of ‘ what if my first post is bad’ (let’s be honest, it will be..)…just try to do a better one next time

I think this summarises my motto in life… give your best and try to be a good person along the way; that’s what I tell myself and my kids all the time.

This sort of lead to my website’s name (that as well took me a while) and I was obviously coming late to the party…’be good’ was taken, ‘be a good one’ was taken, ‘try to be good’ was taken so had to go for ‘try to be a good one’ (it also had to match all my social media channels). Got there in the end. And it may sound sassy or presumptuous but I grew to like it in a way; delivers the message, isn’t it (innit for some). Rest assured that what I would share on this platform will be honest, from experience and be about what hopefully helped and helps me be a better person for myself, my family and my friends

A bit more about me

I am Caroline by the way and if you have read my ‘about me‘ page you will already know that I have embarked on an journey from a small village in France to the bustling city of London back in 2009 to pursue work opportunities. I’ve since fallen in love with the vibrant energy of this city and made it my home.

In 2014, my life took a beautiful turn when I became a mom, welcoming my precious little one into the world. In 2017, my second child was born to complete our family. Since then, my adventures have been filled with the wonder of seeing the world through my children’s eyes, exploring family-friendly destinations, and creating lasting memories together.

My love for travel has been a constant companion in my life. Whether I’m sipping oat latte in a cozy Parisian café, introducing my children to the wonders of the world, or exploring the cultural melting pot of London, I’m always on the lookout for new horizons to explore. I believe that each new place I visit adds a unique brushstroke to the canvas of our family’s life.

In 2018, I embarked on a transformative journey of a different kind – I embraced a vegan lifestyle. This conscious choice reflects my commitment to health, sustainability and animal welfare, making every new destination I visit an opportunity to explore vegan cuisine and discover how different cultures embrace plant-based living.
